IDENTITY
This painting was inspired by two thoughts of Václav Havel that together carry a dialogue about who we are, how we perceive one another, and why our existence is a miracle in which each of us has a share. “To understand one another does not mean to adapt to each other, but to comprehend each other’s identity.” and “Life is a joyful participation in the miracle of being.” form the fundamental axis of this work, where cool tones blend with the gentle energy of inner insight.
The painting speaks of the fact that true understanding between people does not arise when one yields or stops being themselves, but when two individuals are able to look at each other with respect. The identity of each of us is a unique set of experiences, feelings, values, and stories — and it is precisely this uniqueness that can connect us, if we accept it in ourselves and in others without trying to change it. When Havel speaks of understanding, he speaks of the courage to let the other person be who they are.
The second quote brings light, joy, and quiet depth. It reminds us that life is not just a sequence of duties, expectations, and demands, but above all an opportunity to perceive everything that exists as part of a great miracle. We are participants in life, not its passive observers. Every moment, every breath, every relationship, and every touch confirms that something greater than ourselves exists. And it is this joyful participation that becomes one of the most important sources of our identity.
In the painting, letters emerge from cool-colored surfaces as solid, tangible symbols of the ideas that shape us. Each has its own depth and its own energy. The white color along the edges carries the meaning of purity, truth, and transparency — values that Havel infused into his life and his words. The white borders of the letters remind us that identity is strongest when it is truthful.
Only the angle of view reveals their true depth and power. From the front, the text blends with the background, but as soon as the viewer shifts ever so slightly, the structure rises and appears in a new dimension. In the same way, human identity unfolds before us — we never see it fully if we look only from one direction. From one side it appears calm and unified; from another it protrudes into space and shows that within each of us lie more layers than are visible at first glance.
